New guide names UW-Madison ‘Hottest Big State School’

A national college admissions guide published by Kaplan/Newsweek called “How to Get Into College” has branded the University of Wisconsin-Madison as the nation’s “hottest big state school.”

UW-Madison was one of 25 “hot” campuses identified in the 2008 publication, which will go on sale Aug. 20. While the criteria for “hotness” isn’t specified, a news release from Kaplan states that the publication recognizes colleges and universities that all offer top-flight academic programs, “but are also generating extra buzz this year,” which could be related to recent attention-grabbing events or trendsetting moves.

The guide references the great breadth of opportunities at UW-Madison, which has 41,000 students, 140 undergraduate majors and nearly 700 student organizations. “The university has a formidable record in science, ranking fourth among U.S. research universities in total research and development expenditures,” the guide points out. “But it is the old traditions and favorite campus locations that stick with its graduates.”

So who else is hot? Boston College is called “hottest for business,” Cornell University is the “hottest Ivy,” Queens College in New York is “hottest for first-generation students” and Harvard University is “hottest for rejecting you.” Other bastions of hotness include Fordham University (hottest Catholic school), Morehouse College (hottest men’s college), Smith College (hottest women’s college) and the University of Florida (hottest for sports fans).

The 264-page guide, published jointly by preparatory test company Kaplan and Newsweek magazine, provides an overview of the college admissions landscape, reviews current issues in higher education and offers insights on how to make the right college choice.

  昨日安全到达洛杉矶，现在用新买的笔记本电脑，还不错。昨天飞机上坐到一半脚伸不直，不是很爽。但是认识了一个朋友，坐在我旁边。一个土生土长在美国的四川女孩。一头短发，很干练。现在是大二的学生，今年夏天到上海实习工作。在大约中国时间九点多的时候，我开始睡觉，她就开始做学校里的中文作业。她普通话说还可以，因为家里一直讲四川话。我看了她的中文笔记本，即干净又整洁，中文下面又有英文标识。等我大约十一点多醒来（脚酸），她还在做作业。学习真努力啊！后来想到了以前寝室里的殷晚婷，看来读书好的人怎么都一样啊。。。。后来飞机上比较冷，她就穿了带帽子的厚衣服，一看才知道是普林斯顿大学的校服。。。=。=。。。震惊啊！！。。。。后来我们交流了很长时间，我说赛智比赛什么的，她说她几个星期写了15页的论文。。等等等等。。。。然后上了几次厕所再睡觉。。实在是又冷又脚酸，感叹应该带厚衣服！不过下次一定知道了。。

快要下飞机的时候填各种表格，我们互相帮助，她看不太懂中文。后来一起坐车到候机大楼准备离开。互相留了email和facebook，我应该多向她学习啊！多刻苦的孩子啊。。。。=。=。。。

出关的时候还是很顺利的。。。只是多和移民官交流交流。。=。=。。除了问我去美国干什么，读什么专业外，他说话的口气有点艺术化，我说你工作好像很放松的，他说没有，压力很大的！笑笑。。。挺和蔼的。。然后问我住哪里。。我说了后他说这是什么地方。。我说我大伯的地方，他说可以。。。最后他说了一句好好学习。。就出关了。。

拿行李的时间比较长，等了半天老是在转相同的东西，而且也没有人帮忙，你出小费还没有Porter呐。。。反正我麽找到Porter（推行李的人）。后来在靠近传送带的地方我和一个印度老太搞好关系，她看着自己的推车，我让她帮我看我的推车上的拉管箱，然后去挤满人的传送带。。。。等了好长时间，我帮别人“扯”了几个箱子，以便增加人品值。无聊的时候就和旁边很壮的美国妇女搭讪，然后等到第一个黑箱子过来的时候，她和她老公帮我“扯”了下来，第二个红箱子没拉到，后来被远处的人一个美国人扯了下来交给我。。。

拿行李可是互相帮助才能“扯”下来的。。。。=。=。。

然后在LAX机场逗留不久就去图书馆借了几本很厚很厚很厚的SAT的书。。免费的。。。俄。。。。=。=。。

回家后理东西。。。住房都不错。。。很好。。。我住楼上以前潘望的房间。。。

晚上去了一个大型超市“Target"，很近的，晚饭在一家不错的越南餐厅吃，有两个菜挺好吃。。又一个菜不好吃。。（我点的菜。。=。=）大家拼着吃。。。所以我没有迟到很难吃的。。。Jimmy（潘琪敏）说难吃的就不要吃了。。=。=。潘望倒是很好。。把剩余难吃的都吃了。。他说他无所谓吃什么。。。。真是好的习性啊！他还是很错的。。有许多优点：老实，乐于助人，蛮好玩的！今天在社保中心，他帮老太太拿排队号呐。。。

晚上八点多去附近的公园遛狗散步。。（那狗看到我跑就要叫啊。。。@。@。。。不过平时还是很乖。。恩。。）。回来已经十点多。。。就睡觉了。。。睡得挺好。。只是早上起来毛巾毯被我踢掉，看来我要盖被子了。。=。=。

第二天早上。。也就是几个小时前。。去试试看申领Social Security Card（社会卡），虽然我看到过只有被雇佣或者是助教才能申请。。。后来是没有领到拉。。。因为要学校出示我“工作”的证明。。。
